Maybe it is a pre3 "foible" then. I'm still tempted to try connecting the pre3 output phonos "earth" connection to the earth binding post, to see if that makes any difference..... unless anyone screams "nooooooo it will blow up, you fool" at me.

I can't remember my system doing it before, with the tvc and the ear834p.

Edit to add. I did make doubly sure that the pre3 output transformers were earthed to the case, and also removed a little paint from inside the case lid screw hole, so that should be earthed too.

Hi Dik,
The bits arrived from RS today and I've posted some off to you first class this morning, should land tomorrow.

Considering the cheapness of this 'filter' and reading comments above, I can't help wondering if making similar 'widgets' for other household appliances would be worthwhile. Might help stop them corrupting the mains supply around the house? Just a thought!

Best wishes all,
Mike.

Hi Mike
Thank you very much sir=)

I had thought about tracking down and "fixing" the culprits that cause it, but I'd have to fix the neighbours' too. I have flats on both sides, and I'm pretty sure their light switching etc also causes it.... so "fixing" the component(s) in my hifi that's picking it up will probably be easier=) We'll see.

Hmmm, Well I fitted the filter into my WD psu and....... no change.
I guess I'll have to try removing it and fitting it in my amp next, but I'm not sure if that will do anything either- I don't think it's coming via the mains, I'm pretty sure it's RFI sparking or something.
Another question- would it be worth changing the twisted pair cables in the pre3 (from output transformer to phono output sockets) to a shielded type like Soniqs ICT? What about connecting an earth wire from the "earth" connection of the output phonos in the pre3 to the case earth?
Only one way to find out I suppose=)

Hi-i seem to remember a suggestion to rule out RF and it was to wrap the offending article in aluminum foil !

Just for testing and elimination purposes of course.

1/2 hour at gas no 5.

I just tried connecting the "earth" connections of the output phono sockets to the chassis earth post of the pre3.... No difference. I'll remove them after I've had a cuppa. Time to try the filter in my amp I think.
I tried "click detection" with the pre3 and phono turned off, amp on, and everything connected.... flicking my lightswitch brought the usual "Hi, I'm on-now off" clicks. When I turned my amp off, I got the same click from that too, before the amp powered down.

I don't want to make this out to be too big of a deal, my kit sounds lovely and the clicks aren't "too" bad, but I would like to get rid of them, if I can. Next stop, amp mains filter.....

Hi Dik,

Do consider the house/flat earthing also. Is it modern or is there a possibility the earth is not good? A mate worked for Severn Trent Water and said there was always a thing between them and electricians over using water pipes as earth rods. What happened sometimes is that the water people would install new plastic pipes and.....
