Hi Bob/All
Thanks for the pics bob Where are you getting the sockets from I have only found them in four or eight and larger pins sizes or are you just cutting them to the correct size for the relays? Colin

Hi Bob, a different approach, but it looks excellent! I had not thought of increasing the length of the stand-offs.
Colin, the sockets are available currently from RS Components. Part No 702-0666 £3.16 for a bag of 5 + VAT + Postage. |

Here's my 3 penn'north.
The most likely thing to fail is the relay so, as Bob has done, I always, wherever possible, put relays on DIP sockets. Again I say, best part is because the latest relay boards are Plated Through Holes (PTH) you can fit the relay, because it is symmetrical and does not have an internal diode, onto the side opposite the phono sockets where it is readily available to change should it fail, it does not need turning upside down! Of course if it is soldered it it will fail, Sods Law. As Richard says using standard pillars just a dab of solder will be adequate on the "ring" If using Bob's idea with longer pillars then short lengths of TCW will suffice. John |

Hi John,
I understand that the relay may not be polarised, but as far as the information available indicates, the actuation coil is internally located between pins 1 and 10; this end of the relay is identified by a single unbroken line, or bar printed on the top. The assembly instructions indicate that the relay must be fitted so that the end with the printed line is adjacent to its respective diode; this, and the orientation of the diode, is also clearly illustrated on the board itself. If we transfer the relay to the other side of the board, it must be fitted so that the end with the white line corresponds to its previous position. In order to do this, the relay needs to be inverted (rotated through 180 degrees), and will thus appear ‘upside down’ in respect to the orientation of the board. Have I misunderstood this? Maybe I have confused the issue, or perhaps we are talking about different versions of the relay board? David, if you fit the relay to the front side of the board, yes it will be upside-down, but all electrical positions will be the same, ditto relay contacts, diodes fit in same position as well as all other connections. Bare in mind though as I have already said, the relays will now loose mechanical strength simply by not being soldered through the board. Bob

Hi all,
Sorry its a terminology mix up. The way my board is mounted the long dimension of the relay is vertical so the coil indication will always be at the top, whereas normally the long dimension is horizontal as in the pre3/4 and the phono3S so the relay will be rotated around its long horizontal axis, hence moving from one side to the other it will be "upside down", but it doesn't matter as the relay pinout is symmetrical. Don't worry about mechanical strength this is HiFi not rocketry, and turned pin sockets really grip well. John |

Hi All
Yep this can get very confusing for me being Dyslexic and looking at Double-sided PCBs is a mind blower ![]() I have posted up four pics with the relay just placed in position on both sides of the new PCB and the same with the old PCB just to confirm if correct with the old Pcb as the exposed tracks run under the relay but with the socket, in place, this should not be an issue shout if this is incorrect pics of old PCBs to follow up in the next post Colin
