Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?

I'm watching an auction at the mo.. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Goldring-Lenco...QQcmdZViewItem £0.99 That price=progress Ta James for your thoughts, what GL/ arm combo's have been the most succesfull in your experiences? The ones we had in our workshop had the standard (or what was left of it after the little darlings had finished with them). I seem to remember they were rubber coupled and bent/detached easilly, the 'fishing weight' anti skate devices were ALWAYS nicked/missing too. Dave.

Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?
Easiest and 'best' arms are the Hadcock 228 and the Mayware formula IV and V. The metal London International unipivots are good too.
Just behind is the Mission 774 original. There is a list of arms that 'fit' the same mounting hole here. Its worth exploring this site and reading about new plinths. There is a lot about all of this on the forum if you search. James |

Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?
I won't bore everyone with my story of the LP12 again, suffice to say I'm now converted to the idler and maybe soon the DD cause and that's coming from a GyroSE/Orbe/HR which trounced and replaced my LP12 many moons ago. This time last year I was laughing at all the Gyro slaying posts on the WAD BB!
Peter has it right remember how the LP12 came into being in the 70's, hindsight is a wonderful thing, the LP12 has to be the best marketing story/success in the audio industry though. |

Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?
Yes, Darren, I should do it that way.
Back to reality, I am selling the LP12 as its been replaced with an GL78, Hadcock 228 and a Denon 301 :-).

Thanks everyone for your views, I feel enlightened (again). Theres still a big bit of me that wants to hear it before I commit my hard earned readdies to a GL/ Unipivot approach. I've been using the search function on the forum, really great info going on here. Dave. Dave.

Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?
If there is anyone in the Oxford area who wants to hear a LP12/Ekos/KontraB against a Lenco/piece of firewood/103, get in touch.
Its a fair fight, the LP12 is on a wall shelf and the Lenco was dropped on the sideboard. Of course the LP12s best, sir, just sign the cheque and its yours. I'm develping a new arm made of bamboo, its definately variable geometry, it grows an inch a day. Regards Richard Higgins. |

Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?
Ahh a miniture bamboo - I remember see one in the Botanical Gardens in Kandy that was reputed to grow 36" each day!!! We measured it and went back the next day an checked and it had grown 34.5" Amazing plant.
I thought your home made unipivots were excellent and the one with the 103 on it was fabulous sounding :-) Truly inspirational! Are you using split cane or a single piece for the design? I've use a section of split cane fishing rod before now and it wasn't half bad. James |

Re: Linn LP12, still worth the dosh?
The LP12 is a nice player, not worth the money though i admittedly got 95% of the preformance out of a thorens td160 and rega r200 arm.
However i do like my LP12 i'm kinda emotionally attached to it. And to be honest i couldn't use anything else in the bedroom system, that consists of naim nait 1, Linn Kans. The arm is a grace 707 and i finally found a use for the ortofon mc15 super11. But in the valve main system it doesn't shine, and has recently been ousted by a garrard 401. Which suits the system better, and i won't have to spend every second sunday setting it up because the heating stayed on of for a millisecond longer or a passing sparrow flapped too hard in the next village or the earth span on its axis aaaarrrrgghhhh !!!!!!!!
