Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
the problem with the selector now, is that it will just revolve when you change inputs, the hole in the chassis was off the vertical on mine, it doesn't matter,
sounds to me from what Peter was saying you have an old chassis, in particular as you have some scratches, I would talk to Peter about the chassis and order a new switch as well

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
im not worried about the switch, it works fine, doesnt move at all.
Maybe it is an old chassis, peter will know. I need to file out the holes for the phono sockets too. No major biggie |

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
If I remember correctly the original WAD KEL84's were supplied with a basic pot, without a lug. If you upgraded to the Alps pot, it was suggested the lug was snipped off. I assume the kits and instructions were changed when the KEL84 was updated (Alps pot as standard, chromeTx caps etc)
Its several years since I built my KEL84, but I'm sure it was still being reported that there were minor typo's and references from earlier versions of the instructions. From memory they were quite easy to fathom out, and they may have been corrected by now. Guess you will soon spot them and ask if you need too! Good luck with the build. Mike. |

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
I also had to drill out the holes for mounting the output transformers, and there is no mention anywhere about fitting the choke, so i fitted it after i'd fitted the transformers.
All the hardware is sorted, just need to 'populate the pcb' Ill start that tonight i think. Would quite like to know whats going on with the volume control knob though, do i just cut down the volume pot? I dont really like that idea as the shaft is metal. Have i got the right knobs? Is it supposed to be like that? Looks awful! |

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
yes you should cut down the shafts on the volume and selector switches, remember though you have to allow for the front panel

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
No worries, ill sort that after its built.
It makes me laugh, looking through the instructions and circuits and the bags of bits. I sort of know what the components do, roughly, but i dont understand schematics (sp), it might as well all be in greek to me. BUT, by crosschecking the schematic, with the diagrams, sometimes refering to the parts list and checking whats written on the components, all the info you need is there. I just spent 20 mins working out where all the resistors, capacitors etc go and even when you have no idea what your looking at you can work it out. (although ive now forgotten it all ) But if i can work it out once, i can work it out twice. I wanted to make sure i could work out where everything goes before i started. This is the part im looking forward too! Over tonight and tomorrow ill get the circuit sorted, pop into town and buy a multimeter (can anyone recomend anything? Maplins is my only choice, and i dont want to spend a fortune) then ill be asking lots of silly questions about testing Must say, i am enjoying it! |

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
Has anyone got the instructions for this amp?
Where does tab 5 go? The instructions point to an empty part of the board. |

Re: A complete newbie builds KEL84 (hopefully)
on my old instructions it says tab 5 is not used, it isn't on the latest board
so ignore it
