Hi KC, strange, I would suggest that you now remove the signal cable connected from the volume pot to the input PCB at the PCB and connect two phono sockets to the cable so as to bypass the input board and relays compleatly, now plug your CD player cable into the sockets and if all is well your pre 3 should work, if it does you will have to remove the input PCB and find the fault. If it does not work then it's back to basics. The PCB can be a sod to remove, all the solder at the roundels needs to be removed or you will damage the PCB. If you can't sort it I will do it for you, but you will need to send it to me at your cost and return cost. Hope this helps you. BOB

All this trouble shooting is a bit beyond my skills I'm afraid. I am able to follow WD style build instructions, but after that I'm flumuxed, besides my wife is complaining she is becomming a Hi-fi-diy widow, so if you could take a look at it for me it would be great.

Strangely I am working in Wellingborough, just down the road from you in Kettering. I could hand deliver it, possibly meet you at Junction 9 of the A14 Odeon car park one evening this week or deliver it to your door if that would best suit?

Of course I will gladly flutter a few notes for any hours accrued.

I have also sent you a PM.

Regards - KC Jones

I have finally powered the PRE3 up and it works a treat. Not sure what the sonic difference is with it in the system, at the moment I can't hear one, so I will give it a good few hours burn in until I deceide if it makes an improvement.

A huge thanks to Bob for sorting it for me. Bob is currently a busy man, so to fix it that quick was really appreciated.

Has anyone else added a PRE into their system and not noticed it, or is that the idea? the PRE just acting as a selector and volume contrrol to let the power amp just do the ''power''
Or maybe the modified volume control on the KAT6550 has something to do with it?

KC,
In my system (WAD 300B clone, Quad ESL 63), the Pre3 made a big difference compared to the passive pre I cobbled up myself from an Alps Blue pot, a WD relay switch PCB, some shielded cable and a few RCA sockets. The sound is more powerful and dynamic now, but maybe it lacks a bit of the refinement of the passive. Better valves than the ones supplied can yield a big improvement.
