If you go down the crossover route, ask for 4th order, crossing at 200Hz.

richardcooper2k,
I lost track of this thread so did'nt see until today your ref. to the Audiocircle forum - many thanks for that, lots and lots to prep up on.

Ali - it makes sense to have no feet/spikes for the very reason you mentioned. I intend to have an aercrete beamed floor, battened and then oak, if I can afford it or more likely pine t&g. This should help to achieve a very good bass response - re-inforced concrete floors tend to make for a very hard bass sound and suspended wooden floors make the bass very flabby.

I thought about using 2 x 15" woofers per side but is this nec. or is this for bassheads?

Many more questions for later.

A single 18" unit works well.

Bikerman,
that makes sense - what is the sensitivity of the woofers - I really like the idera of keeping it simple.

No idea Stuart.

They are 15 ohm, 20hz - 3Khz, 60W Fane units (183 in old catalogue) with anisotropic magnets. Very cheap on Ebay.

As I understand it (I'm no expert) there is a valid reason for using twin woofers per side, in that as an OB is a dipole, you are losing around 6db in output in the bass, and the way to recover this is to add another woofer, which just so happens to add 6db.

BTW, I have laminate flooring over concrete, seems to work well with the OB's.

I've been modifying my baffles this week.

Firstly, I've cut two new top panels and mounted a pair of Alpair 12P units.

Even using the existing crossovers, it made a noticeable improvement. Today, as an experiment, I've changed the crossover to a parallel configuration, and that has also made a positive difference.

The inductor & capacitor values are now sub optimum so I've ordered some of the correct values and they might be here by the weekend.

Apart from WAF I don't think one can beat baffle type speakers.
