Please Please Me which I suppose dates me. My brother and I saved our pocket money and clubbed together to buy it - I think it was 29/6 (that's just under £1.50 for those who can't remember real money) at the time.

The first record that made enough of an impact on my consciousness for me to remember it was a 78rpm version of 'I saw mummy kissing santa claus' - can't recall who performed it - played on a wind-up gramophone.

Yes it certainly was in those days - I think my dad earned about £25 a week at the time to put it into context. I know to buy an LP at the time was a major event for a school boy/girl which as I say meant saving up pocket money and birthday/Christmas money from grandparents. Actually Please Please Me wasn't our first record (just the first we bought ourselves), as for Christmas my brother and I had been given a record player (with a valve amp inside and not as grand as a Dansette) with two records - With the Beatles and the Freddie and the Dreamers single 'You Were Made for Me' which we played so often that the next door neighbour offered to buy us one or two more records as they were so sick of hearing it. Much to my disgust my mom and dad refused politely.
