IslandPink's 401/Hyperspace impressions correspond very closely to my own 401/Dais thoughts, those who know me well will know of my constant swapping between the two and declarations of "401 is better... no, actually the NAS.... although hang on...." ad infinitum.

Look, they're just different!! And both are very good.

Last week I listened to an Amazon Reference that was on sale second hand, and compared it to a resident Hyperspace using the same Illustrious/Koetsu Red Sig. Whilst the Amazon was able to outperform the Hyperspace on what I now call 'hi-fi stuff', making the Hyperspace sound more closed in and congested, I still rated the Hyperspace as having the more organic and musical sound, and it actually would have been the one I'd have taken home out of the two, despite the Amazon being double the price new. The Hyperspace had quite a familiar quality to it, I suspect all NAS's decks have more or less the same signature.

The Origin Live Sovereign, on the other hand........ Matt, what were you saying about combining the strengths of belts and idlers......?

At vsac the Teres guys and everyone actually with that system (there were a lot of Teres clones), which were quite a few were either using a non elastic cord or vhs video tape to transfer the drive from the motor to the platter. That sort of deck was the favourite there and then, but I don't recall there being any idlers there.

They obviously have a lot to learn, most loudspeakers were diabolical aswell.

Paul, are you dyslexic by any chance, if you don't mind my asking? My son, father and nephew all are/were, and I have most of the symptoms, apart from the fact that I can spel.
Your recent post about being able to see a whole heating system or amplifier in your mind's eye was really a classic treatise on the positive virtues of the dyslexics power of visualisation. In my mind the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Yes it's the truth I have a pictorial memory of eveything but can't for the life of me picture words.

When at school kids used to take my essays off me and read them out loud, the whole room would lagh andlagh and laugh. I hadn't a clue what was wrong with the words but I was very uncomfortable with the situation

I remember overhearing a conversation between my mother and the headteacher, in which he was saying no we don't believe dislexia exists.

I was treated as an idiot that jsut didnt try by the teachers and a source of great amusement by the boys.

Now I don't take sh1t from anyone! I am brilliant in my own way and they can all go and stuff themselves if they miss that point.

It's such a familiar story. You're damned from the outset by the negatives, and the positives go un-noticed. Thank god they're beginning to recognise the condition. When my son was at primary school, they knew he had a problem and a label for it, but we had to fight tooth and nail to get him help. Now he's at uni, they can't do enough to help. I just got beaten at regular intervals for being a lazy little sod.
