OK, some of the original links I had are now obsolete and no longer available, but here are a few that may be helpful.

Original Owners Manual
http://www.audiomods.co.uk/garrard_manual.pdf

Thread that includes guidance on mechanical noise fault finding.

A Service Guide
http://thecrossovernetwork.co.uk/for...he-Garrard-401

Another Service Guide
http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/s...5&pagenumber=2

A long article about the servicing and use of a 301. Included here because the 301 and 401 motors are so similar. For motor service only, click on 'Deconstruction' at the top of the page.

Another 301 service.

I hope that helps.

Thank's for the link's Greg. So the idler tyre was ground yesterday and reassembled, it is so much better and now quite acceptable, I will run it for some time and see how it performs. BOB

Hi all, I have some news regarding the Garrard 401, for the past few weeks I have been trying some new parts, motor springs and rubbers, idler bearings etc, still this turntable makes a noise , today I had a thought , it apears that the answer to the problem is simple, here is what to do with a 401, first, take it outside in the garden, fetch a spade from the shed and dig a hole about 3 feet square and 12" deep, next pick up the 401 and chuck it in the hole, fill in with the soil and stamp it down hard, now, here is the best bit, go onto ebay, and type in Linn LP12, find a nice one and buy or bid,. 'oh! once you have got your LP12, clean and check it out, or have it serviced by a Linn dealer, then place it carefully on your table and play lots of lovely noise free music, and wonder why in the name of God you ever bought that peace of **** called Garrard. PS if you can't afford a Linn, then look for a Thorens TD160 or similar, they are also very quiet. BOB

Are you ****ed off with the turntable, or with yourself for not finding out what the problem is ?

Hi Philip, I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong, it is just the way they are, to be honest, how the hell can one stop motor vibration from getting to the platter!!!!, belt drive, or a good direct drive, my Linn is totally silent, as was my DD Sony, let's face it, even Garrard moved to belt drive. Good to hear Colin, as you may have guessed I have given up on the 401, long live the LP 12. BOB
