Re: okki nokki record cleaning machine

Is there any latest intelligence on cleaning fluids? I'm about to start on the 5th 1/2 pint bottle of VPI and at £8 a throw hope it will be the last. I've saved the empties and ideally want to make up something that will last a while in storage. Rich |

Re: okki nokki record cleaning machine
Did I really say 'fish-tank water'!?
Dear, dear, I meant somethinig like 'a purified, filtered, de-ionised medium that could support the life of various domestic aquatic life species.' I did not mean that one should include pondlife in the mix. But up to 50% car windscreenwash is about right. And very much cheaper than the posh stuff. |

Re: okki nokki record cleaning machine
Hi Richard,
This is what I use and I'm very pleased with it. Don't be put off by the price. It is a concentrate you mix with de-ionised water and one bottle will clean hundreds of records if used with a vacuum record cleaner. Martina Schoener L'Art du Son Record Cleaner Price: from £29.95 Description Martina Schoener has often been fondly referred to as 'the biological internet', meaning there aren't too many people she doesn't talk to or connect with in the Germany Hi-Fi fraternity. L'Art du Son represents Martina's latest project and we have to say that it is astonishing. L'Art du Son has take 3 years of tireless dedication, with developmental stages professionally tested on a molecular level to ensure that fluid met all of the criteria Martina was hoping to achieve. In short L'Art du Son is a new and revolutionary Record cleaning solution that, cleans all records, greatly improves the sound, contains no alcohol, is environmentally friendly, is biodegradable and works with all cleaners, it doesn't get much better than this ! What's more the cleaning fluid works so well that even new records benefit from its cleaning properties. Mike Hobson of Classic Records, a company that specialises in 180g virgin vinly reissues has taken distribution for the U.S. market and fully endorses its use. Available from https://www.audiophilecandy.com/home.asp Best wishes, Greg |

Re: okki nokki record cleaning machine
I'd second Greg on this - Art du Son cleaner is very reasonably priced when you see how far it goes. Also, I am convinced that records do sound better cleaned with this stuff than with the alcohol based fluid supplied with my Clearaudio machine (mechanically identical to the Okki Nokki).

Re: okki nokki record cleaning machine
Many thanks for the replies , plenty of good reading there.
I'm pleased enough with the VPI fluid but it's expensive and I find something faintly ridiculous about having to ship bottles of near-water from the USA. A waste of energy and it took 2 weeks to get last time from the UK distributor. So I'm looking to make something locally for less cost. It seems to be (from much web reading) distilled water plus 6% alcohol and a little detergent. A gallon of distilled was £2.40 and a litre of Isoprop about £8 with the carriage so just the detergent to decide upon .... |

Re: okki nokki record cleaning machine
Quick update.
I tried a little Ecover dishwasher rinse aid with distilled water and 5% isopropyl alcohol on a piece of glass. It wetted only slightly better than the water/iso alone and left a very sticky residue when dry. I then tried the water/iso with Ecover washing up liquid. This wetted much better but left a greasy residue. Whilst most of these residues would be sucked up by the machine some would be left on the record. Ocassionally as the arm lifts off there is a wet patch which quickly dries. It would also be in larger volume on the machine's velvet and in the tubes etc. Trying a thick film of the VPI fluid on the glass left just a trace of a hard dry deposit residue when dry. Trying the water and alcohol alone left no deposit at all so a quick trial of this looked worthwhile. I cleaned 3 specially purchased charity shop LPs with water and 5% isopropyl alcohol to help with wetting. Lovey job, even on the Saturday Night Fever double It didn't wet quite as easily as the VPI solution but just needed a little more liquid and a few more turns to saturate. It sucked up fine and was dry instantly. On playing they're great (noise wise anyway). The ultimate test will be eBay vinyl of course but for all my regular spins this looks a safe and cheap fluid.
