Only speaking from experience of using it over many years on car bits and hifi bits.
Too mean to buy the expensive hammerite thinners lol ��
PS data is sometimes a marketing tool unlike in the electronics when it refers to provable parameters

Hi Bob, Martin,

I think you’re both right about Hammerite. Friends and I’ve used it since 1970 on our first motorcycles and it’s definitely different to the modern version. I have used cellulose thinners to clean brushes but the recent Hammerite thinners smells of Acetone.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the formulation has changed several times over those 52 years. Certainly results have seemed different to me as an ocassional user.


The following is just whilst ICI have owned it and it had other owners before then;

The 2003 ICI data sheet says,
“Roller - Suitable for larger flat areas. Thin Hammerite Hammered Finish with Hammerite Brush Cleaner and Thinners at a
ratio of 9 parts paint to 1 part thinners.*
* Use only Hammerite Brush Cleaner and Thinners. Cellulose thinners and white spirit are not suitable.”

The Feb 2007 ICI data sheet says,

“Roller - Suitable for larger flat areas.
• Hammerite paint can be thinned to ease roller application. Use Hammerite Brush Cleaner or white spirit at a ratio of 9 parts paint to 1 part Brush Cleaner.”

Interesting Richard, I remember spraying an air compressor with hammer finish blue, I thinned the paint with hammarite thinners but cleaned the gun with cellulose, because of the price, Hmm, it just formed a very sticky mess. Bob

Yes maybe we are both right. Hammerite thinners smell very strongly of acetone.
I’ve used Hammerite for 40 odd years and yes I’ve used the right thinners initially and found when thinned for spraying it lost most of its dimples so I swapped to celli thinners, acetone. On price mainly. Please note I’m definitely not talking about white spirit here.
I would say thinned out you tend to get a high close metal flake finish unless you spray heavily with care, and when using acetone it dries a lot quicker than with its own thinners.
I don’t doubt anyone else’s experiences, it’s just how I use it

Just a thought this paint has a cure time and old or semi solid paint needs acetone to clean it

Hi All
Funny you should mention Acetone. That’s what reminded me of what happened to my stands That’s what I used by mistake to clean the stands.Meaning to use IPA on them to remove the marks from old polish

They looked great afterward and had a nice black sheen to them. But as I wasn’t using them I stuck them away only to discover sometime later that greyish/White stain where the polish had been
that's what happens when you don't pay attention and keep chemicals in the same types of containers I should've noted the Acetone odder
there is a bit of humor in there somewhere
