Default Choice of Tubes for Kel84

I have been shopping around for valves and noticed something about the KEL84 design. In the Kel84's voltage spec document is states that the anode voltage on the Power tubes should be around 309V. All tube datasheets (JJ,Svetlana,Mullard etc) rate their tubes with a maximum limiting anode voltage of 300V. Am I right then in concluding that the KEL84 is overdriving these valves and hence shortenting their liftime ?

If so, will this valve ( http://thetubestore.com/preferred7189.html ) solve the issue given that is has higher ratings then the std el84 ? What about its sound qualities ? Do you know of anyone who has tried this tube ?

The "anode " rating is the voltage across the valve. So deduct the cathode voltage from the anode voltage to get the actual anode volts.

Save some money by getting some 6p14p-ev tubes from a Russian seller. I can't tell you how they compare with all the other brands, but Russian tubes are becoming popular and the prices are going up.
I use them and like them.

Hi Philip

Thanks for your post about the anode voltage. The cathode voltage is 11v on the Kel84 right ? So in this case the actual anode volts is 298V, which is within spec but nearly to the limit. Am I correct in my conclusion ?

Thanks for your feedback Al.

I will have a look at this valve. Is it a straight replacment for my JJ EL84 or do I have to change some components to use this valve ?

No, it will slot straight in. As Al says, they are very good.

I've used this seller twice and he's been good, 2 weeks from Moscow, this sale looks like for 1 pair. I ordered 20 6n2p and the postage automatically corrected to lower than single rate, but even at that posatge they look good. (EV is printed EB in Russian for some reason btw)

If you want to try other valves in the future, I recommend these, they are very good indeed IMHO-
