Thanks everyone for the info, schematics and background reading. I can see its going to take me a while to digest all of this, but in the mean time keep the info coming.

After the amp I need to put a cab together, and having a couple of 8" Audax carbon fibres drivers in a box in the attic I was going to press these into service as a start. Maybe a bit too clinical & forward for guitar?

Cheers for the link Pete, I'm well out of touch Bassist-wise these days. That bass is hoooooge, bet its a 35" scale length too, I could make that Ken Smith 7 string he's got there sound sooooo naff

Although I love all the techie bass stuff Colin Hodgkinson is still my fave bassist, bassist/singer with Back Door during the 70's. 4 strings but such a lot feel.

Thats scary! You've fathered 2 bass-playing monsters An old guitarist friend of mine was obssesed with sweep-picking when Frank Gamble was playing with Chick Corea. So many notes, far too many to fit in my ears, I went home from the Electrik Band gig with a head ache.

Bom-di-bom bass playing still works for me though. I was listening to early ZZ Top last night, Dusty Hill had a lovely 'feel' on those mid 70's LP's.

Tell yer sons its all about the groove James

Yummy, that Lieutenant Loose! Thats bonkers that is! When I was a bit younger I spent a whole day learning Catcote Rag.

Ron Aspery died not long ago. Did you know they released an new CD back in 2003? Askin' the way on the Cultural Foundation label.

Hi Simon

It would be fun to build a combo but do consider something like a Champ 12 (12" driver), se 5881/6L6, very sweet and lots of pre controls that would be a pain to make. I bought one off eBay a few years ago for £190 and my lad's just taken it with him to Uni, his favourite amp of several we have,

here's a good Fender site,

http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/

and the Champ 12 info,

Hmm Audax 8" carbon fibre drivers.... for a guitar amp.....

How shall I put this???

No. Just No!

Don't even think of going there...

Unless you want to know just how bad hifi speakers really are

Seriously - they will make a noise but you really wouldn't want to listen to them for long...

A Celestion Rocket 50 is £20 and a proper 12" guitar speaker - its actually rather good so don't even think of using anything less. Above that Celestion Vintage 30 open out and about 20 different Eminences all for less than £50 each

I saw him in Aberdeen a few years back (supporting Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings), incredible player. Also did some great work with Alexis Korner. I did have a recording of a live performance with Brian Auger and Pete York, but I don't know what happened to it . All great performances.
