i think it's a great idea. i'm probably going to purchase a phono3 on spec. it's the speakers i'm interested in - i recently drove to the small shop near brome, bought some tannoy devons, drove home, did'nt get on with them, drove back (after a phone call), no one there, drove home again, rearranged a drop off, drove back and home again!!!!

Splendid idea, if you ask me.

Apart from the obvious benefits of hooking up to existing equipment of known performance and in a familiar acoustic environment for a properly "meaningful" (dreadful word!) assessment, the prospective purchaser (who in all likelihood will be new to kit stuff and may be possessed of all manner of erroneous asumptions) would be able to get his hands on a finished article which would be worth a thousand photos and yards of marketing blurb. In any event, I'm sure this is more than the local High Street retailer would be prepared to do.

P S - I voted "wouldn't want to try it" only because I live in the States, thus rendering the economics of the system impossible. If at home I would definitely be on for a trial.

Just thought I would mention it - important to keep the stats balanced don't you know.

Just a point on the negative side,

Would a valve amp after having spent eighteen or so months being lumped up and down the country by not too careful curriers, having the valves repeatedly pulled in and out for presumably separate packaging, and then given unknown amounts of treatment from prospective buyers wishing to test them at its limits - still perform at its best?

I would guess the amp would be checked over on return. If only to check the innards were still in place :-)

My Arcam alpha 3 has suvived been jumped on, spilt on, kicked arround and used as a step ladder - but it don't sound like what it useta.

Is this brilliant idea happening?

I would love to be able to compare the new WD88VA against my KAT88, and the pre 3 against my pre2. It's a lot of money to invest otherwise when you don't actually know how much improvement you are buying.

The extra £50 or so has to be worth it - there's also the entertainment value
of A - B comparisons. That would keep me occupied for quite some time!
