By using 4 caps i could also make 1010uf 16v. That would mean making half the value from elna silmic and the other half from standard elna. Would that be good or bad?

Graeme if you are into upgrading please don't use what you can cobble together from other old things. You can use these sorts of components to get things going but not for upgrading.

You are after the icing on the cake.

I've delved deep into my spares box and have a pair of Black Gate 1000mfd 16volt caps all brand new and ready to go. Shall I add them to the Obbligatos? If so, £8 the pair and I'll sort the postage.

Regrets I have no BG 100mfds.

As to 25volt caps where it specifies 35volts well the only way to find out safely is to fit them, switch on and measure the actual voltage across these caps. Decent amplifier designers always spec. double the actual voltage necessary and I would guess these caps would have 11-15 volts on them, so 25volts should be all right. But I haven't had a KEL84 for donkey's so I am only guessing.

good luck!

I've done this sort of mixing to get things going when I haven't the right value. Better than nothing but I've found the results mixed. There are a whole raft of arguments about caps of different values and different makes having different internal resistances leading to different behaviour under charging and discharging conditions. Therefore a pair of different Cap in parallel of similar but not identical value or construction may or may not perform as well as a larger capacitor of either type. On balance I wouldn't do this as an upgrade route.

As for does it matter if I have 1010uF or 980 uF the answer is much easier - it doesn't matter.

Thanks, yes please, include the 1000's, that would be wonderfull. Ill PM you about this.

I just went and checked the price of elna caps

If i'd known that i wouldnt have bothered asking, they aint exactly expensive!

I might try the 25v cerafines though, i guess the worst that can happen is they blow yeah?

if they dont blow ill measure the voltage at them and see how close to the limit they are.

Hopefully they will work till i can find some BG's.

One last thing, whats c22 doing? something for the heaters right? Im guessing no effect on sound?

Just seen your reply too terry, thanks for the advice. Ill probably never use the cd again so i think ill strip it for future projects.

If you want to go all out on coupling caps, the best I've heard are the SCR teflons from diyhifisupply.Pricey, but worth it IMHO.

Graeme

can you recap on what values you now need? I have various BGs and Elnas (all used but not over-used) and some Nichicon Muse
