Re: Rustling Pots
Hi Lee, all, aplogies for the late entry to this thread due to a severe case of windburn caught in Cornwall last week .
I too love the Pan pot. Just had a look at one and you can easily access the track/wiper through holes between the sets of 4 tags. (Look carefully and you'll see the rotation in there.) They are plastic track and usually very long lived so maybe there's a bit of solder/flux debris. (I know you were well into the shunt pot mods a while ago Lee.) Whatever, a small squirt of Servisol Super 10 has fixed many pots and switches for me (old scopes are always cacked), from Maplin, http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?...RVISOL&doy=6m8 (Use just a little on the track only as most of the "feel" of the pot is caused by silicone grease used on the shaft and too much cleaner will wash this off causing a cheapo feel.) Side-stepping this pot though, as said, I used it for several years as best by far of the reasonable price pots. During those shunt-pot trials we had though I tried the mod with cheapo carbon pot, Alps Blue, and Pan pot, using carbon film and metalfilm resistors. Many combinations, but the best, by a fair margin for me, is the Blue with Maplins metalfilms wired as the faq. The Pan didn't suit shunt mod at all (with my resistors anyway) and the cheapo still sounded rough. I've re-visited the Pan pot alone since but it just made the shunted Alps sound even more obviously better imho. |

Re: Rustling Pots
Hi Rich.
Thanks for the info. I will give it a strip and clean when time permits. Hopefully Adrian will be getting some of the PEC pots to try for us also. I will give the Panny a going over whilst the PEC is in the PreII and then decide which is best and use that in the Loftin White project. I have an Alps too, so if the LW is a keeper, I will sell the Series II stuff with the Alps in and keep hold of the Panasonic as they are no longer available. I had a feeling that there would be silicon or grease of some kind inside the shaft to smooth/dampen the movement, and that's why I have not done anything yet. A few people have just suggested spraying cleaners inside, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't going to wash away anything like the grease you mention, so will strip it all down instead. It could indeed be full of flux and dust from the shunt mods that were done a while ago. Cheers all,
