I expect life exists somewhere else, maybe all over the place dotted amongst the vast inpenetrable nothingness and it's nice to romanticise about these possibilities in fiction but it's actual relevance to us is unlikely to ever be more than zero.

Drakes "theory" has no doubt been much better for him than saying "of course it's all an incredibly unlikely load of ole 80ll0X but gis the moolah to keep me 'n' me m8's in important looking well paid work anyway will ya!"

Of course funding for rockets and satellites has all been about a bright new future of trekkie style interstellar travel and absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with significant military advantage and mega financial gain.

We need to get earthly matters at least partially right before worrying about what might be going on a million billion light years from us. I would love to be proved wrong though, or would I?
I think it was Stephen Hawking who pointed out that our encounters as humans with less developed life forms or races are generally not good news for the conquered and that contrary to the idea of a peaceful scientific voyage of hope and enlightenment from a superior peace loving altruistic race a military conquest (War Of The Worlds stylee) would be far more likely.

A valve humming affects me directly, life on planet Alderaan probably wont.

The world we live in is incredibly diverse and fascinating, why obsess about something we will never see?
