yes goes without saying,

in this thread, I think this is the same as your amp, pic thanks to Matt.

the resistor you require is the white one, which is 10 ohms, 5 watts, and I think I see an adjustable bias pot, that's the gold coloured thing.

another good hint is either wear DRY rubber gloves, or if nude, rub your hands in talcum powder, and don't touch the other hand/part of your body to anything metallic.

do we have a FAQ on how to bias a fixed bias amp?

No you can't plug in the ecc83. filament piout and voltage would be wrong.

Some years ago an ebay seller was selling Russian 6n1pi for a few dollars, I was converting ecc83 amps to take them at the time since ecc83's are daylight robery.

If you have to ask whether you can just plug an ecc83 into your amp you can't make the necessary adjustments yourself. I would shop for Russian 6n1pi.

Thanks both for your replies

Im not going to take the cover off because I dont know what im doing.

Im beginning to understand the concept of biasing (thanks Ian) but I think It would be better to practice electrical stuff on something with not so many Volts first.

To that effect there are Svetlana 6N1-p's for not much money on Watford Valves website. I will buy a couple of those and see if there is an improvement.

So far the biggest improvement to the sound has been putting my speakers onto a couple of old thick hardback books, pushing the spikes in and angling the speakers to be just a couple of inches wide of my shoulders.

Best Wishes to all who have taken the time to respond to this total Newbie.

Jack.

Very wise. Usually Russaian valves are better made than Chinease, except the boutique tea strainer 300b's that the Chinease have cottoned onto.
