Class A solid state amps do work and they can sound not just good but really good. However I would doubt that they are something for a first time kit maker to look at. To do real Class A well and with enough power to make them usable needs either a fan (most users will reject this on noise grounds alone) or very large heatsinks which run to high costs.

My original Krell KSA 50 sounds really good and will has worked effortlessly with any speaker I have connected to it but it is by no means cheap and having looked a the dual mono build it does not look like something that would be easy to transfer to a Kit . To get class A to work and compete with a good valve amp it does need this level of ability . The only way for me now other than a return to valves would be a class A single ended solid state design and I think that could sound really special . I heard one designed by Tim from EAR which something i will never forget but the cost !!!

JLH best ss class a amp I've heard, big sinks and bias the hell out of it.

Take a look, it's VERY complete including pix of finished article and suggestions for alternative semi conducters. Also has full versions of PCB layout for etching.
Rapide have reasonable priced Txs for this one too.

Yep it’s not a new site when BT pulled the plug on hosting some websites the class a amp site was rehosted by Rod Elliott of the ESP website by agreement with Geoff moss the owner of the JLH site
who has now now retired all the updates to the JLH were the work of Geoff moss
The site has been as is for the last what 17 plus years now

I can see you have it all at your finger tips
I have rebook marked the site and have hard copy now. Just in case I ever get round to making a pair (some day). Biggest difficulty / drawback for me is getting the pcbs sorted.
I found this site in the UK, B'ham infact when I was looking for heatsinks for the big 110w JLH monoblocks.
They are very helpful and contactable by phone as well as email. They will supply almost anything in heatsinks.

Yep I have been indenting to build this amp for a long time 20 years plus I may or may not still build it I got as far as getting a set of PCB of this type


The Conrad heat sinks are the best deal you will get a pair for around £70 plus the price of one for shipping for the MF30 -2F 151

PCBs are nice for things you build and never need to touch again.

OR, you could use PCB pins.
