My 'Solid Air' is solid CD, I'm afraid.

I coudln't find the real thing at a real price and
maybe my listening pleasure isn't diminished
that much.

For more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Martyn_(singer)

For my take...He's good! Simple as that A brilliant songwriter/musician usually backed by a stonkingly brilliant band. He's gone through everything and written songs about it. He's gone from 'tender-folkie' (London Conversation, The Tumbler) then teamed up with Beverly who became his wife (Stormbringer and Road to Ruin) through folk-jazz hybrids (Bless the weather and Solid Air) through full on jazz/rock crossover (Inside Out) then dipped into bliss-out-trance-sounds with 'One World' (ammmmmaaaaaayzing LP BTW) then him and Bev split up and he did buggerall for a few years until 'Grace and Danger' came out which is a stonkingly brutal LP of songs for a lost special love and admission that he's a baaad boy!! The 80's were full of up and down output IMHO, some crackers, some iffy. He developed a brill gravilly souly voice and in the 90's he revisited early songs and 'souled em up a bit', again, very different and evolving all the time away from folk and towards a Jazz/Soul sound. For a while he just did gigs with just a keyboard player, full-on Synth stuff.

He's a big time boozer with a dalliance in chemical things (allegedly), resulting in 'interesting' live shows and output.... I've seen him for getting on for 20 times (I'm a fan...can ye tell???)). On a good day he's totally mesmerising, really. On a bad day he's an arrogant washed-up one legged t1t with a brilliant backing band. I've come away from his gigs totally dissmayed and totally walking on air ;-) Someone said you either wanna punch him or cuddle him, yep!

Stick with it MrC, one will turn up, I got mine cheap after hankering after one for ages. I'll keep a look-out for you at Record Fairs.

It's cheap on CD, been reissued a kazillion times I'd imagine as has most of his output, it's not 'rare' as such. He never really made it 'big'.

Another John Martyn album worth checking out is Live At Leeds (I have the double LP re-issue). Amazing guitar sound, acoustic through effects including echoplex (a definite influence on U2's The Edge) and superb double bass from Danny Thompson. Some great banter too!

Agreed Mr Darkness, but I though that LP might be a bit tooooo far out for Mr C's introduction to JM. Sundays Child is an underrated classic too and 'On the Cobbles' from a few years ago also.

Bolero....sniggers!

I have been checking him out on you tube, most of which is late concert stuff with Danny Thompson, great gravelly voice, loads of music I recognise just didn't connect

He's also been on Transatlantic Sessions on BBC4
