Well there's a thing.

As my 12E14 SE amp approaches the twilight of its life and prepares to meet its doom at the hands of the new fangled OTL, it has pulled one last trick out of the bag as if in defiance of the coming hailstorm of EL509s.

Running the 12E14 with a feedbackless ultralinear connection, using 45V bias, 300V anode and 306V on g2, it sounds superb. The screen is running at 6V above maximum allowable voltage but there is no glow from the wires so I guess we are OK. Apart from anything else, it is a relatively cheap tube, because nobody is interested in it, so maxing out the screen is not really much of a problem.

The 12E14 sounds really good in triode mode but UL operation is something else. An iron fist in a velvet glove would be a good description of the UL sound of this unassuming, short, fat little regulator valve.

There are no UL curves that I could find for the 12E14 so I was in uncharted waters but operating one like this at highish volts/low current, the exact opposite of what it was meant for, reveals a beautiful sound lurking in there.

As ever YMMV but anyone with a stash of 12E1s and a pair of Hammond 1627SEs or similar with UL taps could make a lash up to test whether they agree or not.

i have those...

that brings me into the fold too...

one day i will have a go...

in the mean time... i'm sure i'll be back on px4 in the next few months

the open baffles are in bits again for a slight revision. but before i started, the 2p amp made my det25 sound rather sterile and lifeless.. more of everything really ...the tribute transformers have really sorted it,

the 2p valve is a mini px4...

quite impressive..

in comparison to the 300a i would say theres more extension but not quite that midrange... ed and scott dropped around on friday night i think they liked it..
