What value load resistor for Denon 103?

Doing some tests with a 103 and need to change phono II load resistor. to get me started in right ball-park, I wondered what value 103 users have found best. I've read anywhere between c.10K and 25K (using 1:10 step ups).

Try 10K to start. This is what I'm using with my 103R...but is does appear to have a different load to the regular 103 so you may end up going higher.
47K is a little to high.

As I recall it Denon 103 needs 40-100R of load. I used to own one back in 70's.

The impedance ratio for a 1:10 tx will be 1:100 so if you wish to try loadings of 47R to 100R at the cartridge use 4k7 to 10k at R13/14.

Generally, you may find a brighter tone with higher impedance loading and a duller sound if the load is lower.

It suggests that the ideal load should be >100R. I have had great results with a load of about 500R. If you try <100R I think you might find yourself agreeing with David Price!

Neal G of this BB wrote an excellent 3 page article in the Nov issue of HiFi World, which would be a good place to start.
In it he writes that he eventually settled on a 280 ohm load for a 103 and a 47 ohm load for a 103R, so for a 10:1 step up thats 28k or 4.7k.

Thanks Richard. I'd forgotten that article and will look it up. I've just rigged up an off-chassis resistor board with values from 10K to 100K on each channel. I like the 39K Rikens, but early tests show very little difference 10K-48K. Beyond that there's a big jump to 100K, which sounds very odd - woolly, incoherent and as if the t/t speed is constantly changing.

More listening in the next 72 hrs.

the move from 47k to 10k was a very subtle one in my case. I was using just standard resistors, nothing fancy. i need to go back and try the 47k again to check...really need to set up a system like yours for checking. no croc-clips though!
