waiting for Visaton B200's to OB
Just ordered the B200's having read loads of threads. Hoping to see what all the open baffle stuff is about. Will post review compared to my One Thing Audio Quad esl57's through both homemade set monos and much modded S Impact. Any other takers on ob here?

Re: waiting for Visaton B200's to OB
No but my friend Jonathan Noble has gone onto them from Ariels. The Ariels are now upstairs in the bedroom.
He uses a car speaker, a ribbon tweeter and a gainclone driving a woofer. The bipolar is powered by SE 2a3 and ribbon by se45. Those were his plans how many yare fulfilled I'm not sure. I must give it a try. Jonathan has always been right in the past. Only thing lately I can't get my head around is he is enjoying the gainclone. Said he drove it with his 45 amp.

Re: waiting for Visaton B200's to OB
hi
would be very intrested in reading your results and findings,i played around with some ted jordan fullrange xoverless drivers in a open baffle design amoungst others..... considering i never researched it much and just knocked up a couple of different baffles to try it i felt i got some good results, although the bass was limited what there was was of exellent quality....the problem you will face i think is once youve heard the open baffle approach everything else using a box will seem very coloured...hence my other speakers are magnepan! other then baffles you could play with compensation circuits,i never tried this as i wanted xoverless operation. also play around big time with room placement has this can make or break the overall effect. let us know how you get on with your drivers. all the best smithie |

Re: waiting for Visaton B200's to OB
With all due respect I doubt I wil find the Ariels coloured.
I don't think they are perfect but they aren't boxy or coloured to their fault. They may otoh be a little plain, lack deep base and they impede the ability of the tweeters.

I like the B200s. I especially like what happens when you put them in a long corner back-horn...
As for the Ariels, we can do better now. Lovely drivers and crossover. Stick them in an MLTL. A little more bass, and a heck of a lot easier (and cheaper!) to build while loosing no performance. |

Re: waiting for Visaton B200's to OB
Hi Paul
Just musing, but If I'm reading the blurb correctly...if you choke the port on aTL does it not convert to MLTL?? I ask this because Lyn's original mk 6 had a variable plate on the port to be adjusted to preference. I didnt include this on my review pair but did slightly reduce the porting. I have circular ports slightly smaller than the oblongs on the original drawing......Does this imply that I might be a bit tighter at the bottom end. Ed |

Re: waiting for Visaton B200's to OB
Yes, it will convert it into an MLTL. Whether that makes it optimised though is another kettle of fish. Your own smaller vent sizes will increase the ML effect. More likely than deeper / tigether bass is a slight reduction in ripple over 150Hz or so.
