Default Hats off to the cap

Hi,
fitted the LED to my Ebay Kel84 today.
When I looked around the board I saw this?

I found the intact casing in the chassis.
Everything has been and is working fine.
Any thoughts?

On the LED, does fitting it lower the volume at all?
cheers

Hi Guy,
yes, it was/is a cap the same as the one next to it. 25v 100uf.

John, is the cap polarity correct?

If reversed they can explode and that may have caused the cap to shoot off.

Is it quieter just on one channel? The 100uF caps are the output valve cathode de-couplers. The EL84 that that cap is connected to will have very high NFB and as a result low gain. That's assuming the cap is open and not short circuit.
Although not unheard of, it is unusual for caps to blow like that for no reason. Before you fit a new cap, fire the amp up and check the D.C. voltage on the cathode of the related valve.

Phil.

Hi,
Guy, don't know what happened, I'm sure the cap was ok when I received the amp from Ebay.
Rob, can't check the polarity as the markings are on the cap but it did and does play ok.
Phil, I'll swap the wiring and check the channel volumes.
I have the two Kel's wired so that each channel only drives one driver, left channel woofer, right channel tweeter on both amps.
I'll check the voltages.
cheers

Wow, even with an exploded capacitor?

Treat yourself and get a new one!

Have a look here.

Hi Guy,
I think I've read of people taking the outer caps off their caps for a sonic improvement.
Don't know if it's recommended though.

The cap has blown for one reason or another. You need to sort it, regardless of whether music is still playing or not. It could simply be a duff cap but that possibility IMHO is at the bottom of the options list. There is likely to be a circuit fault that needs to be sorted and you need to seek this out.
