Default Oscilloscope

Hi all,

With my recent disaster with the wad amp and a number of other, more successful projects on the go I keep wondering about purchasing said piece of equipment. I figure that a scope will let me get further into the hobby. Prob is, only used one at school! and that was more of seeing who could get the best squiggles!! Ive ordered a book as an introduction but what further advice can you give me???

Stu

Depends what you want to spend Stu but these Hameg 20Meg are usually reliable and plenty good enough for our purpose. The agents are down Luton way I think, I've got a smaller one and I spoke to their tech dept once, helpful and servicing and spares seemed reasonable. If it's as described anything up to £80 would be fair,

Get something and play with it - seriously this time and you'll soon get the hang of it. A sig gen is also useful/essential but those 2 and a few made-up leads will do most things. You can pick up power meters/distortion meters etc but they are just icing on the cake. None of them are expensive and you can soon sell them again if it's not your thing.

Yep, I agree with Richard, that sort of scope can be a godsend for finding whats going on in and around amps. Problem is test gear becomes addictive in itself, I have finally found a requirement that a 20meg scope can't help with. So if anone knows of someone with a spare Tek 7704a mainframe or above I might be interested (sorry for the partial hijack of the thread).

Haven't I heard somewhere that a CD player with a suitable disc can be used as a signal generator? It should be possible to create a CD with suitable test tones on it.
