WD25As have arrived.!!!
Just a quick note to the team to say that I am VERY impressed with the packaging, delivery, finish of the woodwork and most of all the instructions which are brilliant!!
They make everything so clear and simple. I'm now waiting for the weekend before I lose myself in the garage for the day. I'll report back on the sound ASAP Best wishes, Dave. |

Re: WD25A's have arrived.!!!
They're up and 'running in' as we speak!
A very 'clear' sound. No boxiness at all. Midrange is very accurate but not clinical. Treble is lovely and detailed, but also extremely smooth. I like it. The bass is interesting, very linear roll-off so no lumps but a nice clean sound to it. No booms, poofs and shakes, just natural bass. I'll report back after BOB MARLEY LEGEND has finished!! Are these the standard ones, or the super-duper ones?

Hi Shane, I've got the ordinary tweeters, but they sound just fine, mate!
24 hours later.... Midrange is just a touch smoother and the bass now has a little more presence to it. The cone makes the bass, not the cabinet shaking around as in some other speakers...so far so good.. Imaging is first rate too. I've just realised that my amp actually sounds OK, it was my old speakers holding it back! All in all a great choice Dave.. |

Re: WD25A's have arrived.!!!
With a speaker like this, when powered with a low powered amp, the LF cone may not move much, especially with a high damping factor amp.
So, to try to lower the LF response (resonant frequency), it can be very beneficial to give the "spider" a bit of a stretch. Do this very carefully. Place your five fingers of one hand evenly distributed around the cone circumference near the surround. Press in gently and slowly, so that the cone moves perpendicularly into the cabinet. You MUST be careful to not allow the voice-coil to touch/scrape against the pole or top-plate. Hold the cone in for a few seconds to stretch the spider. Repeat, several times!!! Do this all again next weekend and the following weekend. By then, you drivers will have fully bedded in!!! Your LF response will be "kick-ass". Let me know of your results and findings. Neil.

Or hook up mono through a gainclone in the garage each driver face to face? That's what the Lowther nuts used to do to shorten the endless wait for lowthers to start sounding good.

Probably worth adding the drivers should be out of phase too. (just to quieten things down a bit)

Re: WD25A's have arrived.!!!
I've had them for two weeks now..some more points to consider.
Classical stuff sounds lovely, I play woodwind in my spare time and I have noticed a true 'tone' to clarinets for example. Brass sounds detailed but smooth. These basic tweeters really are good. I have not had sore ears since I bought the speakers. I'm really pleased with this. Low stings sound more 'real' too. No boxiness at all. Simple acoustic stuff sounds lovely. The tone of voices is great on stuff such as Norah Jones and Katie Melua. Good seperation between instruments, even in the background of the mix. I am very, very slightly disappointed with my 'rock' stuff, such as Pink Floyd or my pop stuff which by the nature of their recording seem to lack a bit in bass when played on the speakers. Maybe the last point is a little unfair, as they are audiophile speakers and not rock boxes with a designed lift in the bass. I am very interested in hearing the difference between these and the planned floorstanders. On the standmounters, the bass rolls of from 100hz (I have listened to test tones from 100hz downwards and these prove the roll off is quite slow and gradual with no peaks). I wonder what the roll off point of the floorstanders is, as this may be more suitable for Pink Floyd etc, or a bigger listening room. I presume you can simply take out the drive units and X-over from the box and put them in the new bigger box? If this is the case, there may well be a mint pair of cabinets for sale/swap/whatever with anyone on this forum who fancies the smaller speakers. Anyone have further details? Regards, Dave. Neil, I'm a bit wary about touching the drivers. Will this make a significant difference to the LF performance? I'v used a speaker run in track, will this not suffice? Dave.
