Default Plug & Play Mains Power & Safety Monitor

A friend of mine has kindly bought one of these for me from Maplins. I think they cost only about £12 and are very interesting indeed.

They measure mains voltage, current, wattage, frerquency and kWH.

Very clever and now I can work out how much the telly consumes when it is on 'standby'.

Andrew,
how much juice does your telly consume on standby? I leave the PSU for my CDR and the CDR on all the time.

Stuart, I will try my telly tonight.

My monitor (CRT 17 inch) at work on standby consumes 30ma. Now that isn't much is it. When on, it consumes half an amp.

mains supply is 235 volts @ 49.9Hz - I wonder if the latter reading shows the level of accuracy of the meter or the maisn really is 49.9Hz. I expect the voltage will fluctuate.

I read somewhere a few years ago that the frequency of the mains supply can vary quite a lot.

The electricity supplier only has to average 50hz output over a day (so that some alarm clocks will keep good time), it is free to allow it to drift either way in the short term as long as it makes the average.

So maybe later it was 50.1 hz for a bit...
