Active (valve) Crossover?

As the title says, but read the poll options too!

All options marked with an * assume that instructions for setting the crossover point and roll off rate would be included, I expect these would include a bag full of alternative and cheap starter components, upgradeable once the punter is happy.

It's a fascinating possibility,but one I think that would have a very limited application,and therefore be unlikely to be cost effective as an offer.

Given that active speakers with offboard active crossovers are relatively few in number(and most producers of actives do so with their own dedicated systems,like Linn,Meridian and ATC),then the market for a standalone valve X-over is likely to be even more restricted,and the issues of tailoring a x-over for an individual system are more complex than simply frequency,and roll-off(Linn's for instance take into account a degree of phase correction,as well as bass level and extension,plus treble level).

Boxes like Bryston's active crossover are obviously quite pricey,but even at half the price,would give an idea of the likely costs involved.

I think that this one is perhaps a bit too complex and specialist to be do-able, but you never know.

I currently run a Behringer active xover fed from a preII.
into a wad kat88 LF and kat84 HF driving Home brew TL's fitted with 6" Tannoy DC's with Tannoy super tweeters
it would be nice to ditch it for something with valves in. I have seen designs out there on the net mainly from the good olde usa.

It's an interesting idea certainly,but my own experience with active crossovers(trimaped active Linn Keltiks,and also Meridian M3s) is that good designs are costly,and their applications are limited,plus there are very clear benefits in the tailoring of a crossover design to an individual speaker system,and whilst going active can produce immense benefits in terms of speed,control and power reserves,it's not an easy project.

try visiting Rod Elliot's site ESP - active x/overs that work (and Rod has been using them for well over 20 years). Rod has a programme that you punch in the parameters of your speakers and it gives you the values of the components. His PCB costs around $20.

Oh I forgot to mention - you end up with a far better sound. As to more expensive - you've got that the wrong way round.

Can you point me to a link that describes this active crossover you're using? Will this work for a 3 way speaker?

I'd also like to ask whether or not you've tried swapping over the amplifiers to see if the current configuration is the best or not?

Berhinger do a 3-way as well as a 2-way active x/over - it just costs more.

I've scoured their website before I made my other post and can't find anything even about a 2-way crossover.

Probably can't see for looking.
