Smile Millenium 4-20 (Maplin Electronics)

This was the Millenium Valve Amplifier that was in the Maplin Electronics magazines back in 1994.There was also a pre amp that went with the project. However I think that the Amp alone is good enough.it`s the poor mans version of having a valve amp really compared to what I have seen on the internet.Recently I was in york and was looking in a shop window and seen all the lovely finished models.

However! I was browsing the internet to see other peoples maplin amps. One of the forum posters in here was talking about this amp and I decided to upload the pictures of mine for him to see. I think it was member scott2006...

Anyway! here you go folks!! My start into the forgotten technology of Valves :-)

I forgot to answer this post. I`ll dig the amp out and open the bottom. It`s straight forward. I did not use the metal boxes and went for a more open approach. Saved on metal bashing as well as money.

I think ur probly getting a little blinded by the marketing/finished apperance, there's nothing wrong with the maplins, they are as good as most commercial.

Yes indeed, a nice amp and, if anything, a nicer looking build than the Maplin one - it will sound good!

I too have the Maplin articles and there were alu chassis and pcbs that could be bought. If building it today the tag strip layout for the WAD 5881 would be suitable as they are almost the same amp (circuit-wise).

Richard.

Do you have the 5881 diagrams?
I quite fancy hardwiring my Maplin amp one of these days. I think the original output TXs were the weakest link here, do we know of anyone who's bothered to fit something better?
