Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
Hi
I am awaiting the arrival of my new sqeezebox so I thought I would download the Slimserver software so I'm ready to go when the squeezebox arrives. Problem is that I can't get the Slimserver to work at all! I have it installed on my laptop and on my desktop PC. When I try to start it I get the little balloon which says 'slimserver starting'. Thats all it does, it never starts! I have this problem on both my laptop and my desktop (which was going to doing slimserver duties) Both machines running Windows XP, desktop machine is bang up to date with all Windows updates, firewall switched off. I have an ADSL broadband connection through a Vigor router. Any suggestions guys? Thanks Martin |

Re: Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
Hi Martin,
Which SlimServer version are you using? Are you using an account with admin rights? Is there no help on the Slim web forum? I'm using 6.5.0 and I have it working on both Win2000 and XP on a laptop. I have the feeling I needed to reboot the XP laptop before it would get beyond "starting Slimserver" but it did eventually work without me doing anything fancy. Cheers, Tony |

Re: Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
I had a lot of trouble with 6.5.0, including non-starting, and I eventually downloaded and installed one of the nightly betas.
You can get to these on the Slim Devices web site. This solved my problems. Cheers Mark |

Re: Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
I gave up with 6.5.0( was always flakey for me, I think due to the MySql problems) and reverted to 6.2.2. I have had no problems with 6.2.2 whatsoever, runs ok on XP(SP2) and my HS linkstation.
Have you checked the processes list in task manager.....you can't miss it cos its the one that uses most memory. Ed |

Re: Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
If you ever have problems with Slimserver starting or crashing, it is often useful to run the server from the command line and see what error messages exit.
On windows: open cmd window cd C:\Program Files\Slimserver\server run slim.exe slim.exe is the compiled version of the perl which makes up slimserver. If you have a perl installed, you can also run it directly with perl slimserver.pl. As long as you have enough memory, I would recommend 6.5 over 6.2 as it is generally faster and less prone to audio drop outs due to database access. However the use of mysql unfortunately means more memory requirement which impacts low end NASs. |

Thanks for your advice, yes there was some help on the slim web forum. I eneded up un-installing 6.5.0 and downloading 6.3.1 which worked. However I started my laptop today and 6.5.0 now starts OK, wierd...... I got the Sqeezebox today and it connects to the server OK. Any Idea how to listen to the BBC radio 3? Thanks Martin |

Re: Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
Re alien - If you don't post here on the Slim forums and we can help you out... Most windows problems are related to av/firewall software.

Re: Squeezebox Slimserver wont start?
AlienBBC works ok on 6.5.1 beta Build 10078 for Windows. Unfortunately, the rest of the Internet Radio stations don't!
Just waiting for the real 6.5.1. Mark |
