Looks like a good idea, only problem i would have is getting the metal poles. Where could you get something like that from?

Well the metal poles you are referring to are threaded bar which you can get from Diy Stores like Texas or B&Q

It's just threaded bar, I think places like B&Q sell it, something like this:
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/na...ected=products

They only list 12mm diameter on their site, but I'm sure a quick google will come up with some more hits.

Another alternative is something from the "Lack" range from Ikea. You can get small tables all the way up to a big sideboard type thingie. They are good supports and cheap too.

The Lack thingie sounds like a good idea.
Several coffee tables stacked on top of each other, legs cut to required length and spiked. And you have a Russ Andrews look-a-like for - well, not a lot really.

On the other hand there are quite a lot of stands on ebay for not very much - if you like glass and steel that is.

Look in Yellow Pages for Metal stockist/suppliers and/or fixing supplies who will also provide many of the other threaded bits. Access to a lathe would be good but it wouldn't be difficult to find an engineering company who for reasonable price would spike end the threaded stock for you. The stuff you get from B&Q will be simple (rustable) mild steel. A good metal stockist will supply threaded stainless at the gauge you need. In comparison to finished supports, it's a nice DIY price. It's available from RS http://uk.rs-online.com/web/ but will be dearer compared with local suppliers, albeit it comes straight to your door.

The Ikea Lack option works provided it is a lightweight support you want/need, and surely it is a cheap Russ Abbot look alike. For the record, when I use my Slatedeck away from home (including show demo's), I support it on a Lack coffee table, the legs of which will readily accept a spike kit (again, a bit of DIY ), but be aware that if you want to cut down the length of the legs, there is very little solid stuff to anchor into other than at the business ends of the supplied legs.

Hi thanks for all your replies. Ill take a look at what local stores have in stock. I actually know a local engineer who made me some large 50mm volume knobs out of alloy on his lathe. I'm sure he could produce something suitable for the stand.

I'll see what works out best and cheapest.

Cheers all
