Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
I've recently acquired a pair of Musical Fidelity MC-2 Loudspeakers, with the intention to put them in my dining room system. One of the tweeters seems to be working better than the other. I want to have a go at reparing these, but as it's my first attempt at tweaking loudspeakers, I'm not sure where to start.
is it likely to be the tweeter that has started to fail, or something in the crossover? if it's the tweeter, I'm not sure where to start in my search for a suitable replacement, so any help in selecting something approximately similar would be appreciated. In fact any tips as to how to go about getting these back to working condition relatively cheaply would be good. I'm not fussed about them sounding exactly like a factory fresh pair of MC-2s. both sounding the same and approximately right would be enough. the Bass on these seems to be quite good. it's just a shame that the treble on one is a bit quiet - the tweeter does seem to be working but low output. I've not had a proper look inside yet, but it's 4 screws to whip the woofer out to get access to the innards. |

Re: Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
Hi-not a bad speaker in its day (for the price).
i bought a pair new in 1987 and they are still in use in my study system. They were on QED tristands and were only replaced by KLS3. I wish you luck in sorting them out. Philip

Re: Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
thanks.
I paid around £40 for them so even in their current state I'm pleased with them. though the missus is a bit unsure about me putting them up on wall brackets in the dining room for background music... hopefully I'll learn something on the way too... |

Re: Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
Hi-the MC-2 relates to the second design by Martin Colloms for MF.
to be honest i think £40 is a lot for old speakers that dont work properly but youve done it now. Philip

Re: Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
you're probably right. I thought they were working, but I did get them bundled with an amp for a total of £75 delivered, so maybe I just paid over the odds for a Rotel Amp...
thanks for the info, I didn't know what the MC denoted. might come in useful. |

Re: Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
Probably the easiest way to approach this is to swap the treble units over and see if the one which is 'quiet' remains the same. If the quiet treble stays with the speaker then the crossover is at fault.
If you let us know what the treble unit model number is we can perhaps help with a replacement if you need one. |

Re: Repairing MF MC-2 - low output on one tweeter
a quick test has shown that the low output follows the tweeter (I'd hoped that the large 7w 2r4 resistor in the crossover might have drifted up.)
Anyway, the label on the back of the unit is printed "MADE IN THE UK" and stamped 25DT 34 348 8Ohm if that means anything to anyone. I think its 40mm mounting with a 55mm diagonal, but it's screwed to a MF plate 118mm x 88mm. |
