Power supply quality

Hi all

How important would you say that the power supply is to the overhall sound of a valve amp and if you were to upgrade the said power supply which components would you change in order of preference to give you the best results.

For an SE amp the psu is part of the input and output signal current loops so it is in series with the input and the load it, therefore, has a strong influence on the sound.

For a PP amp the output signal current loop doesn't go through the psu - the input signal current loop does still and for any SE voltage gain stages - so its influence is less.

For a fully balanced throughout amplifier the psu is not in the signal loops so its effect is at a minimum.

For SE the psu and its components should be as good as the amp... you will hear both clearly.

Most important components are the 'last cap in the psu' i.e. the cap bypassing each signal stage and the rectifier and its snubbing.

Yes I would go for good diodes if solid state, or nos valves, pay most for last cap and work back. I've never had experience of bipassing bad caps, people here find it helps. Good caps better unbipassed to my ears, YMMV. Choke input is a minimum standard for SE.
