Simple phono stage
Would it be possible to provide a simple solid state phono stage that could be added to the kel84 amp? Maybe as an optional extra? I occasionally play LP's but not enough to warrant the expense of a separate phono + power supply. And a built-in phono input is much more convenient than a separate box.
Also, why are there so few valve FM tuners available? |

Re: Simple phono stage
Because they don't make 'em any more! Seriously, there are quite a few on ebay.

Re: Simple phono stage
I meant new ones. I can only think of one. Magnum Dynalab? Unless everyone's using DAB nowadays, which I doubt.

Re: Simple phono stage
As far as I remember, Magnum Dynalab don't make valve FM tuners. They are solid state with a valve AF stage (rather like the Njoe Tjoeb CD). Not to be compared with valve tuners built by the likes of Leak and Quad.

Re: Simple phono stage
Hi Simcox,
Your post looked familiar, I asked a similar question a while back, http://wduk.worldomain.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2127 Our outcome is that we just use that cheap ss stand-alone head amp which cost about £12 from a radio rally and works very well. It isn't high end but is enjoyable, a Pioneer PL12D with Nagoaka MP11. There is a little hum but that is drowned by vinyl roar the moment the stylus touches down. I didn't persue putting it in the deck or amp for the same reason as many probably - it makes changing those items within the system more complicated. It does look tempting though to include that little pcb inside either and perhaps with a little refinement could make an "optional extra" for the KEL84. Rich |

Re: Simple phono stage
That's what I had in mind. Something simple that could be added to the kel84 if desired. Something like the optional phono boards that can be fitted to a sugden 21a or Quad 24 preamp.

Re: Simple phono stage
A work mate of mine has the Cambridge Audio stand-alone Phono box, he's happy with it. I think he said it was about £50-60 ish.
