Default 88Va output transformers on Kat6550?

I read on another thread that Peter has improved the spec of the transformers used in the new kits. Given that the new 88va is UL and uses KT88s and that the transformers on the new kit look very similar in size, can we drop them into Kat6550 and are they better than the old transformers?

only way to find is by trying.

Better is a meaningless word indeed.

technically? depends how you technically judge a tx....low winding R, high primary L, low capacitance, low leakage, balanced between windings, more than just enough layers to achieve a minimum frequency response, power handling ability, core distortion. some of these are at oods with each other

or sound?, we really don't know.

I think the general consensus on transformers is that there are differences between them, but it can alter the balance and you may not like it, and it may not be worth it.

I doubt many new transformers will be as good as those of yesteryear, some really are magic.

Very much like caps., differences, but polarized opinions, myself and richard are happy with vishays and orange drops

The circuit diagram appeared in July's Hi-Fi World.

Flicking through the article the transformers are 5k primary, 6R output, with U/L taps at about 40%. They are built on a 78 lamination core, 2 inch stack.

Thanks Prince.

I missed that months mag but see the earlier articles are now on the WD site, thanks Peter.

The new amp looks very good doesn't it. I can see many of the best features of previous WAD designs in there. It will be very interesting to get a listen to it.

Hi Ian

Yes, I can easily live with them. Maybe they aren't the best at everything but they do almost everything right and so make for a very practical amp. I still have a couple of sets and some very nice OPTXs so will build something with them at some stage.
