Re: SME / Ortofon (OT Web Hosting)
Darren,
You might want to get your web programmer to earn his living - Google searches for slatedeck ar not bring up links to your website. Mel |

It's me....! Don't think I'm doing too badly esp with everything else I have to do. While we're here, I have noticed on some peoples computers that my site is too wide for the screen, needing to scroll left and right to see all. On mine it's fine. How do I make them "auto fit" width wise? Also a lot of peeps don't see the fonts I use. I guess that's because they don't have them in their own font banks. So how do I know what's best to use. The site is getting larger by the week, so editing every page would be a pain if I had to keep guessing what fonts to use? |

Re: SME / Ortofon
No easy answer to that Darren, if you try and use HTML as a desk top publisher and control the exact appearance of the page, then you have problems with size and fonts.
if you write simple HTML, then the page looks less than great. HTML's wasn't designed for what we do with it, but maybe read up on style sheets, thats the best way to do layout now. Unless you end up with flash or some other client side drawing control.

Re: SME / Ortofon
Darren,
What are you using to produce the website, I use a plain text editor and write longhand which gives me full control over all content and formatting. I presume you use a package of some sort? For my basic browser I use 100% Microsoft (Explorer Vers. 7) and still maintain the Google search for Slatedeck does not bring any direct link to your website in the first few pages (by which time I give up). Even Slatedeck.com fails. This is the most popular browser so we need to get it to pick you up. I will do a bit of research research and contact you via PM so as not to corrpupt the posting links. Re: SME / Ortofon
Yep, agreed Darren, this search for example
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta= Finds reference to you, but not a direct link to http://www.slatedeck.co.uk/ having said that, I guess most of the site is on tiscali? At least most of the links on the home page go there, if the name maps maybe try renaming the links to slatedeck. Google tends to rate site shigher if the domain name matches the dubject (and many other things not worth going into here) Wheras, this search: http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...e+Search&meta= Finds your home page, but the link is to http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/valvehaven/ Getting listed on google is a major profession now, we (the company I work for) have someone fully employed running the google advertising campaign, and there are only ten of us in the company.

Re: SME / Ortofon
Hi Guys,
Thanks for the guidance, really appreciate it. When I started building the site I must admit I was really struggling. Nothing like real hands on as a learning tool. Dreamweaver was daunting as it's so comprehensive. Mind you it's also limiting at times too. I have domain names registered with www.slatedeck.com .co.uk & .net These all re-direct to my isp's free webspace on tiscali. It's free so why not. One major disadvantage is I can't give a link to a sub page without the long winded tiscali address. But hey, it is free and reliable. Hadn't thought about the implications with the Google linking/ranking thing though. Would be much better if it was counting my own links wouldn't it..!! But just how do I rectify this? |

Re: SME / Ortofon
Google will usually list the root host site name in preference to the re-direct name. You can still get to number one that way but you will often be showing the "homepage" hosting.
The only way you'll get slatedeck.com etc to always come up is if they are the root host. Choose one name and host the site under it at 1&1 for a fiver a month. Point the other names at it also (Google won't list them but anyone typing .co.uk etc will get to you that way). |

Re: SME / Ortofon
Now I'm confusing myself,
I already have a host page that I have paid for with @ukplc It is they who re-direct to my home page on tiscali from their site when the viewer types in my web address. I've been at this a while now and still not 100% sure how it all works !!! |
