Default Compact Mini Bookshelf Loudspeaker

How about a good quality but very small bookshelf speaker?

No larger than 5" by 8" front baffel and not too deep. Good for use in kitchens, bedrooms, rear speakers in a multi channel system.

A good introduction into the world of building speakers.

The reason i went for active is that i have tried those little ipod portable speaker things and they are pants.

I think a decent small bookself with something like a 'T amp' inside would be the dogs diddles for music outside the listening room

Can i ask the "no thanks" people why they voted no?

Is it because they dont think such a small speaker can do HIFI or is that they just dont require such a speaker?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul,

I've not voted because I don't have a need for such a set of speakers, but I know plenty of people who would be interested in them. Maybe modify your vote options. I actually think they are a great idea. I would have bought a pair a couple of years ago when my son went away to college. He likes good sound and had a small study bedroom. They would have been ideal in such an application. I suspect they would be good in a study or home office or even kitchen type stuation. Most would not consider them good for a main system, but in a second system they would be well worth considering.

Best wishes,

Greg

Hear hear, Greg! both my kids have Denon DM30 CD/tuner/amp combos in anticipation of university. Something like this would be much nicer than the slightly nasty Wharfedales they came with, and would have saved me a few quid last Chistmas as well.

Hi Shane,

Exactly. We bought him a DN 31 and it came with the stock Denon speakers which I understand are made by Mission. I know however these can be improved on and as the unit can be bought without speakers, a quality DIY option would have been good. I now have this system in the dining room which I use for radio listening and the kids use with their CD's. Better speakers would certainly enhance the performance.

Best wishes,

Greg

I designed the DM30 and DM31 speakers for Denon which were made under the Mission banner when I was there.

You would not, or you might if you know me, believe the effort that went into matching these speakers to the electronics in conjunction with listening tests with Denon UK 'golden ears'. As a result it is unlikely that the speakers can be bettered unless you go to something larger for a superior bass performance. The midband coherence is 'tuned' to the electronics perfectly for a highly musical result, resulting in What Hi-Fi Awards three years running (I only otherwise achieved that with the Heybrook HB1 and, nearly, with the Mission 780).

I didn't have anything to do with the latest, only four star, DM33 (and I did warn them!).

Hah! I should have known!

A certain ex-colleague of ours sold me the DM30s at a brilliant price, but unfortunately the deal included Wharfedale Valdus 100s, rather than your efforts.

Hi Peter,

Ok, I eat my words. You can't improve on the DM30/31 speakers for their size

Actually, this mini system has an awful lot to commend it. It's very balanced and listenable and the speakers which are nice and fast work well against the wall.......well they would, wouldn't they

Best wishes,

Greg

You might find a pair of Denon SCM50 speakers on eBay?
