Mills resistors
Juat to let anyone interested know that after fitting Mills wirewounds 12w in place of the bog standard kit white cement 2R2 and 27R resistors in the treble part of the crossovers in my WD25TEx speakers, I am very pleased with the improvements, So much so that I have just forked out 60 odd dollars to change the rest (8 in all: 27R, 2 x 0.68R and 2 x 15R elsewhere. Let´s see if anything happens.

Re: Mills resistors
They work, don't they.

Re: Mills resistors
They certainly do and I also fitted them in a mate´s WD20Ts (also built with external crossovers) and he is over the moon, too.
Has anyone tried different caps to the Soniqs provided in the kit ? |

Re: Mills resistors
I would recommend Mundorfs which I now use in my KLS3's. They do a variety of options and increasing prices. Pick your price limit!

Re: Mills resistors
Thanks Greg,
What sort of level are we talking about to improve significantly on the Soniqs PXX included in the kits ? I´m a great believer in teflons in my phono stage, are teflons au-fait for crossovers too ? |

Re: Mills resistors
I'm also a fan of Mundorf caps, I have used several types but only the "evo oil" in speakers. These were a big step up from the Solen fastcaps they replaced. I'm afraid I have never used the Soniqs so that info is probably of little use to you !

Re: Mills resistors
A mate reckons the use of jantzen wax coils is also a good move. Has anyone any views regarding the original kit inductors ? Another mate, electronics engineer reckons a coil is a coil is a coil. Who knows ??????

Re: Mills resistors
"Straight" electronics people are usually worth ignoring when it comes to HiFi. They refuse to believe that caps/cable/resistors etc,etc can possibly make any difference because, they believe, if it does not show up on their scope, it does not exist.
Personally, I have never used "high end" inductors so can't comment on their worth, but one thing worh considering is their DC resistance. If this is different to the ones you are replacing then it may change the "voicing" that the original designer intended. Phil.

Re: Mills resistors
Just fitted the 15R and 27R mills wirewounds in the bass circuit of my WD245TEx crossovers. ( Before I only had them in the treble ) due to having ordered 15KR and 27KR like a prat.
As was to be expected, the treble has improved probably even more than the bass. Go figure..... One day I´ll change the Soniqs tweeter cap and try a Mundorf Silver/oil. |

Re: Mills resistors
In a 2 way I would certainly expect the midrange to improve (detail/clarity) but treble seems a little surprising
