Remote Volume control (or Mute) as an optional extra

Since building my KEL84 one of the only things that i miss from my previous few Amplifiers is the remote control.

I'm not too bothered about remotely switching inputs as i very rarely ever did this. I do miss the option of finely tuning the volume level from my listening position and also the ability to mute the sound completely, e.g. when the telephone, or doorbell rings, or when my dog barks when somebody approaches my house.

Sometimes it is just handy to mute for a few seconds to see what the 'noise' is and then continue listening.

Having the option of Remote control at initial purchase time, or buying a remote control kit to retro fit afterwards would be something i'd be interested in.

I agree with Sid. And I know that makes me a lazy git, and my listening room is tiny so it's hardly a three day trek to change the voulme but still a nice simple remote would be nice.
Just looked at that. Agreeing with Sid in itself doesn't make me lazy. Wanting a remote might.

Hi,

Remote volume control kits are easily sourced from suppliers that can be found on the web. I've fitted an Alps motorised pot to my PREII, the remote driver PCB, is powered from the heater supply. For the handset, I have used my existing Marantz CD's remote which had volume up / down buttons.

I'm at work at the mo, but will post details of the kit when I get home later.

I also own a KEL84, and speaking from experience, I suspect you maybe hard pushed to fit a motorised pot, as it going to end up pretty close to the PCB.

Thanks for the info Mike, i plan to look into this further when i get the time.

One little quote i did find amusing from your link was this little gem;

I bought a RC kit from Quasar Electronics. It was about £14 for which I got the handset and all the components to make the reciever. Just need to make your own PCB or use veroboard.

The receiver has quite a few channels and pulls an active low for each channel. There are ICs out there that are effectively electronic switches that will work with the receiver. Alternative is to make your own with relays, diodes & flipflops.
