Stand the pins in a little coke or brown sauce.

Yes, this came up in the WAD BB and coke really works. Never tried brown sauce though.

I've not tried brown sauce on valve pins but I have tried on a Middle Eastern bass table top. Came up really well.

Coca-Cola does work, but more effective and less sticky was a recommendation of NealG's: "Wonder Wheels"; a Halfords type product for making Motey Car bits shinier.
Simply stand them in the stuff for an hour or a few and then wipe dry. Repeat if necessary.

Be careful with nos tubes and worn printing. I found the fumes loosened the print on a pair of signal tubes and it wiped clean off!!!

So if chemicals (even in food stuffs) might be bad for the nos valves, how about Richard's original suggestion of the fibre-glass cleaning pencil readily available from Maplins and elsewhere. It works well but is a little time consumming and in the process, glass fibres are shed. Moral is, don't clean your valve pins whilst naked

Best wishes,

Greg

As my Gran always said, a stitch in time saves nine, and don't clean your valve pins whilst naked. She was from Birmingham.
