better sound with speakers tilted down at front
hi all. stupid question. just moved my floorstanding speakers, further apart, and found ,if i tilt the front down about 1/4", i get a better sound. more open. put some foam under the back. speakers are about 2mtrs apart, and i sit about 3mtrs from them. am i sitting to far from them, or to low. never realy played that much with speakers before. ken

Re: better sound with speakers tilted down at front
How high are they, or rather the tweeter, and how high is your ears when sitting. Should be aprox the same.
Sounds like your speakers are a little too high. |

Re: better sound with speakers tilted down at front
What speakers? Sounds like they have a forward power lobe which is tilted upwards. Some designers expect the listener to be seated with ears at or slightly above treble unit height.

Re: better sound with speakers tilted down at front
Hi-what would be the ideal speaker height when using full range drivers ?

Re: better sound with speakers tilted down at front
Hi Philip,
I think it's slightly lower than our KLS3's It depends on the seating/listening position, but isn't it recommended tweeter should be at or just below ear level with lower drivers below that? Best wishes, Greg |

Re: better sound with speakers tilted down at front
Well I had hoped to find a pic of them to see the driver arrangement, but never mind.
Greg, the general recommendation might be that, but it depends too much on crossover alignment. If we presume that the treble unit and bass-mid or mid are phase aligned, then if you look at the side of the speaker and draw a line through the centre of the treble unit and bass-mid or mid you will see that it is angled downwards. So the main lobe of most speakers will point down towards the floor. Many speakers therefore sound better when tilted slightly backwards. At Mission we reversed the treble and bass/mid position so that the lobe pointed upwards instead and then corrected the phase so that the forward power distribution was correct when the listener's ears were level with the top of the speaker. However we are assuming that the designer knows about phase integration. As many don't it seems that, in this case, the phase is shifted so that the main power lobe points upwards and therefore the speaker sounds better when tilted forwards. |

Re: better sound with speakers tilted down at front
Not without a re-design of the crossover which shouldn't be tackled lightly! You'll need measuring equipment and perseverence, or we can do it for you at our office near Huntingdon.
