Default KEL84 as a power amp

Hi, what mods need to be done to use kel84 as a power amp only?

Thinking of building an active pre.

Hi Graeme,

If my memory serves me well, I think the only mod required is to exchange
r2/r3 from 1m to 100k ohms.

This has been well documented in many threads, i'm sure you will find several posts relating to this if you search through.

Regards

Mike.

Im sure ive heard something like that mentioned before.

Ive searched loads, ive been searching kel84 threads pretty much every day for the last month while modding my amp. Havent really found a thread about this though.

As i said, im sure i read something very similar to what you said but i cant find it now.

Can anyone confirm the r2/r3 thing?

Hi Graeme,

My Kel84 (although not used at present) is still built as an intergrated amp, but has had a few mods. I did consider rebuilding as a power amp, but use a KAT6550 instead.

Neville Roberts (who posted on this BB only a day or so ago) wrote an article about converting his Kel84 to a power amp for Hi-Fi World some time ago, maybe he can comment?

Regards

Mike.

Hi Graeme,

Yes, use one set of inputs and disengage the selector switch and volume control. Signal wires from inputs straight to PCB input. Remove 1M R2/3 and replace with 100K and you're done.

Best wishes,

Greg

So are phono leads then used from pre amp to Kel 84 phono sockets?

Hi

I have done this mod and highly recommend it. Sounds much better all round in my opinion, even with a passive pre using a stepped attenuator. I just changed the resistors and ripped out the internal wiring.
