Cone needs rescue
Hello guys,
I found an old pair of full range speakers but one of them has some cracks in its paper cone. The paper is very soft and light i wonder if i should put some glue there or something to seal it. Any thoughts? Last edited by hentai; 15th October 2009 at 05:33 PM. |

Re: Cone needs rescue
If the sides of the crack are not seperated and you're not worried about appearance, I'd use a artists paint brush to apply a smear of PVA glue to both sides of the cone, overlapping the crack edges and allow to dry thoroughly.

Re: Cone needs rescue
Normally I too would use PVA, even possibly watered down and you could build up a couple of layers. These speakers might not be sensitive (like the dread Lowthers) but this tear is on a crease and you might try to preserve the movement of the cone that won't dry 'hard', which will at least give a physical distortion. Bathrroom sealent (silicone based) or a 'rubbery' glue might be a better bet, again applied with a view to a few thin layers.
good luck! |

Re: Cone needs rescue
I once asked Malcolm Jones (Falcon/Kef) about the doping and glue used on drive units and he said they used a soft grade of PVA adhesive used by bookbinders. This lead me to use Impex Hi-Tack PVA craft glue for one of my drivers, a B110 dustcap I think. Anyway it's easy and cheap from craft and stationery shops and dries clearish and flexible compared with the wood glue version which dries much harder. Easy to water down too, maybe paste thin tissue (aero-modelling or craft shop) over the splits as the weight/inertia effect will be very small at the outer edge.

Re: Cone needs rescue
Ah, that's a good 'un. Flexible PVA! sort of combining the best of both kinds of glue - Give it a go! I will the next time I need to repair damage. I'm rather good at pushing things through speaker cones!

Re: Cone needs rescue
Hi Andrew,
Yep, I was never thinking about the wood glue but rather the standard PVA for general purpose use that has a flixiblity when dry. Richard's suggestion brings refinement. Regards, Greg |

Re: Cone needs rescue
thank you Greg,
it has also been suggested that i should use a patch like a soft thin layer of tissue paper. |
