Default Original WAD speaker.

Did anyone here ever build the original WAD 3 way speaker as described in Supplement 3 (June 1993) ?

If so any thoughts on them.

didn't build a pair but always wanted to, I was a young teenager at the time and really wanted a pair, sadly no woodworking facilities put a stop to my plans.

Hi Grog - did you ever get round to building your own design of speaker ?

Not the "day job" but your personal project.

hi Philip,
yes have got a few round the house ;-)
at the moment i think my favourite is either the 6.5" & 1" aluminium drivers in 40L or the 4" woven full range in a tiny little 2L enclosure.

Hi George - I would be interested to hear more about the 2L enclosure model !

I made a pair of small cabinets (3000cc - 10cm X 10cm x 30cm internal) ) for use with the computer using 4" Sony car speakers and they sound good, so I would like to investigate anything similar.

They are quite solid, using 1" MDF for the front & back, and 3/4" chipboard for the sides. All from my store of odd bits of wood. Top and bottom are from an old dressing table and all the joints are routed.

Tried a 3 way based on that design. I used Scanspeak D2010 tweeters instead of the ribbons, and a different paper coned woofer. Madisound designed a LEAP crossover for me. There was something fundamentally wrong with my creations which sounded weak with no bass or body. Unfortunately one of the Morel MW114 S midrange units got damaged (kids) before I could tinker with the speaker, and the project was abandoned.

Hi Philip,
sorry for the very long delay in replying!
the 4" driver is pretty good, It must have taken me about 200 hours designing the first prototype cone flare, I managed to balance the break up modes so that they cancel.
The unit can have a resonance between 60 and 150 depending on application, and is pretty flat out to around ~15k.
they will play up to 102dB anechoic and at this level mid band distortion is below 1%.

I don't think i've got the best out of this driver cabinetwise... yet!
it could tollerate a slightly bigger enclosure.
currently in 2L is ported at around 80hz, but i think in 3L ported a little lower it should sound even better.

it does depend a little though on priorities, the lower frequency you drive any speaker to the more distortion you will have for a given volume level.
