How is everyone’s hearing?
Just for fun the other day I played a test CD I’ve for ages (featuring the voice of Michael Fremer no less) to check out the performance of my WDPre/88/25T’s and I was a little disappointed that the 15kHz tone was silent. Obviously the frequency response rolls off above 10kHz I thought.... That was until my 16 yo daughter pipes up from the other room to tell me that she can hear it no problems. (Sigh) At least now I know not to splash out on a pair of super tweeters and save myself some money! And I’m not even 50
Anyway, I still enjoy my music and my daughter didn’t think much of 15kHz anyway. Cheers Phil. |

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
Your no alone Phil, my hearing rapidly deteriorated over some 6 months, mid frequency's now sound very distorted , bass is still very good but I can no longer hear anything above about 9000Hz fortunately, listing to my Stax ear speakers is still quite good and to this end I am thinking of an upgrade to better Stax ear speakers. Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
HELLO
I too can only hear up to about 9kcps in the good ear and 8 in other, having now a focused system the balance difference is far more pronounced sometimes,on the plus side tracing distortion no longer bothers me and clicks and pops I don't hear at all result Stuart

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
Last time I checked, I could hear up to about 13kHz I think.
Supertweeters are funny things. I have a pair of Townhsend audio jobs and despite my hearing range I can hear when they are switched on. Vocals sound smoother and things just sound more open and a bit more spacious, but I am not currently using them. The odd thing is, although they make things sound better in an analytical sense, I find I don't miss them when they are removed. They don't seem to add to my enjoyment of the music. Oh, and the one thing they don't do is make your system sound brighter. If you research a bit, you will find simple extended frequency range is not the claimed reason for their effect. It is apparently to do with better phase performance and one or to other things. After all, any modern speaker can reach 20kHz which is the limit of a young persons hearing and most supertweeters go to 40-50 kHz. I really should make a decision and either use mine or sell them! Phil.

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
Always had good HF hearing, and at 50 I can still hear to around 17.5k last time I checked. Downside is I had an ear infection a while back which left me with constant ringing in one ear. Quite low level though thankfully.

Most of the time I hardly notice it, but now, just thinking about it, the "volume" sounds louder.

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
Hi Riggers et al,
Bite the bullet and go and get your hearing tested. You may be surprised how bad it is. Mine is at least -6dB at 8khz so now I wear hearing aids in both ears. At least I can hear the lady wife telling me what to do John |

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
I’ve had hearing aids for about 6 months but couldn’t get used to using them to listen to hifi speakers. It was very disappointing after a life time of hifi being my main hobby. I have gone over to using headphones and in ear phones for my listening now and use an equaliser to boost the frequencies I am lacking in. My wife is also very happy because she doesn’t have to listen to my music!!

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
I too have hearing aids, but don't use them at all now, they make my music sound bloody orid and they do get uncomfortable, may be we should rename the forum to the wrinkly design, . Bob

Re: How is everyone’s hearing?
It took me about three months and several visits to the audiometrist to get them right, but still not good with speakers. In earphones can be surprisingly good (Soundmagic E11’s).
