KEL84 tranny hum on L channel, plus click at switch off

Hi all

I've spent yonks tweaking, putting in new caps & res all over the place in PSU, Phono II and KEL84. Just when I thought I'd finished for now I note a hum on L channel and an increasingly loud click at switch off. I guess all the fiddling about inside and turning it upside down will not have helped.

What should I look for apart from the obvious? I should add that the trannies hum a littl emore than they used to when standing next to it, not just through the speaker.

Is there anything I could add as click suppressor?

Hi Adrian,
Did you put all the mods on at the same time? If so smack handies for you:-) yuo should know the rules by now only one mod at a time.
Does the amp hum alone without any input? If so you need to sort this first.
Please report back accordingly.

no, they weren't all done at once - the KEL84 was re-resistored first and then the PSU and then Phono II, with listening tests at each stage.

In answer to your Q - the KEL alone with no input now exhibits a buzzing more than a hum, or rather the buzzing that is now there drowns out the hum which is now more recessed. I've swapped spaeker cables and then valves L to R to determine that it is on the L channel.

Still a nasty click at switch off

Brain now in gear so....
Do you think your buzzing is mechanical or electronic, ie can you hear this through the speakers or only when standing near to the amp? When did you notice this? Are you sure it is on one channel only? What is different between channels? You will need to analyse what you have done to make this "problem" occur.

Hi John, thanks so much, I'll phone tomorrow. Oddly, the hum has decreased. It is indeed on both channels, although louder on the L. I can only really hear it today with my ear close to the speaker (no more than 8ins).
