Long drive belt
Hi-although i now have a 401 and GL75 to replinth i would still like to do something with my belt drive creation.
what i want to do is move the motor outboard of the platter and drive the outside of the platter using a longer belt. can anyone suggest where,or perhaps have an old one just to try. i cant remember which turmtables were driven in this manner. i would prefer a flat belt rather than a circular (like a giant o-ring) one. Re: Long drive belt
Hi Phil, I've got a spare FJ23a Drive Belt 210mm http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?...=9m7&source=15
spare if you'd like it, I bought it when attempting to resurrect my old Yamaha PF 20 last year, its the wrong size for me and now with the Lenco Museum building up I'll just dump the TT anyway, i bought it from Laskys (remember them in a bout 1983) and it wasn't very good then but cheap. The drive belts yours if you want it, still in bag, never used. DTB

Re: Long drive belt
Hi DTB-thanks for the offer.
i checked the link but its still too short. The platter is 300mm dia and the belt would need to be approx 1 metre long !! i reasoned that a belt driving the outer rim would impart more torque to the platter, and enable me to lower the height of the assembly. perhaps i should attatch a rubber wheel to the spindle or drive a rubber wheel with a belt as in TD124. Re: Long drive belt
Hi Al-thanks for finding that for me.
i could move the motor a tiny bit closer and i think that it may just fit. i am loath to dismantle the belt drive as i put a lot of work into getting it finished.i want to give it one last chance. Philip

Re: Long drive belt
Hi-i have now ordered the "long" belt from GB audio (thanks again Al) and having a chat with the guy on the phone he seemed quite supprised how many of us were using Garrards and Lencos.

Re: Long drive belt
Hi Philip,
It may be worth experimenting with video/audio tape for the belt. The Teres crew rate mylar (iirc) as the best belt material. What you can use depends on the motor pulley of course, but a non stretchy material provides more even drive, so they say. It won't cost much to try it anyway. Regards Colin |

Re: Long drive belt
Certainly a non-stretching drive belt should in theory present a challenge in performance to idler and direct drive TT's. The problem in my view (I've thought about this) is implimentation. How do you get a rigid non-stretch belt not to slip on drive surfaces, remain servicable for a significant period of time and has a totally linear connected end join (invisible connection)?
Best wishes, Greg |

Re: Long drive belt
Hi-now i have ordered the "long" belt i will wait and see how it works, before trying tape.would have to be an old compact casette (remember them ?) cos VHS tape is too wide.
As i have the 401 and GL75 in bits at the moment, and both need plinths,i will hopefully be able to use the belt drive in the system for a while. I managed to get a GL75 baseplate on e-bay (£5) so i will try cutting off the R/H side and welding the edge back on cos i like the look of it that way ! Philip

Re: Long drive belt
Hi-its up and running in its new guise.
Sounds OK but i think it is a little light in the lower regions. i really must try the Pickering cartridge ive got in the drawer against the 103 ! Philip
