Default recommended Output TX's for PT15 ?

Hi ,

have decided to keep my Hammond 16xx series TX's in my 300B amp and get new TX's to better suit the PT15 SE amps I'm building.

Can anyone recommend suitable TX's and where to source from ?

many thanks
Pete

Do you want custom or stock products, Pedro ?

well i dont mind really,

- I'm happy to pay for good quality, but Ive only ever really used hammonds - mainly in my own guitar amp builds , so I need guidance on whats regarded well . I was advised to use the hammonds on my 300B before I knew that there was plenty of other options out there !

Happy to spend a couple of hundred quid or so.

cheers
Pete

So, there's loads of esoterica out there depending on how fat your wallet is. I have been very impressed with Hammond 16XX whatever that gives mey
10k primary; okay itsnot so big as Audionote 10K jobbie. The ultra linear tap is at 6K on the Hammond. So you could really exploit the pentodeness of the valve.

I have never experimented with using such high primaries with the likes of the dreaded blood red or rather dull 300b. If I don't need the power, and I don't, I should try it, when I get round to it. 300bs are not as exciting as ... well anything else really and particularly PT15.

hurry up and let up know what happens.

I keep mentioning the AskJan First trannies as I have found them better than Hammonds and they are now cheaper too

Jan also gives you a trial period on most of his beasties.

As for spec. you need a 5K to 10K trannie at about 80mA and 6 or more W and an inductance of about 45H or more... you can accept 20H plus but the bass won't be as good - extension and quality through the mid-bass although only an A/B trial might show this depending on what your speakers are like and what you are used too...

Thanks James,
I've emailed Jan for a quote on 2 TX's.

just in passing I saw your post regarding using Rapids 40p cheapie pots for guitar amps - which do you use ?

I'm just finishing up a Dumble-style ODS "clone" and have previously only used Alphas. I'm a guitar amp nut - I have built Champs, 18Watters, Plexis, Plexi 6V6s, and a Dumble ODS copy and have 5 guitars to occupy these amps from time to time !

All I have to do now is find out whats inside Alf Hermida's fabled "Zendrive" ( which I have had on back-order since March this year !!) so I can build one myself before the real one arrives !

I got into Valve audio via this guitar route - fatal !!

Thanks for the guidance again.

Regards
Pete

Having just seen you are in Leeds Pete, I have a pair of 10k 211 TX's that you are welcome to borrow to get started. should be fine for PT15's

I am between Bradford and Halifax.

Pm me if you think they will be of of any use.

FWIW,

Jan has emailed back having read these threads on PT15 SE and has recommended their ATH40 which is 6,5kOhm.

They can do 7K version too, with another 1-2 weeks lead time.
I guess the 6.5K will close enough for my Fostex FE167E TQWTs.

cheers

It sure is close enough :-)

I've just asked my wife to get me a pair of 40s for XMAS

Oh These are cheap Rapid pots I use - they are 69p each now - its a couple of years since I bought any as I ordered 20 off last time . I use them in amps and in guitars themselves. I design and build quite a few guitar amps too - My best ones use DHTs on the output - either 2A3s for lead or 845s for bass amps I built a beautiful 845PP bass amp that had really wonderful tone and definition... I sold that for quite a lot of money ... I get a lot of requests for single EL84 based amps too - some with quite elaborate pre-amps. What speakers are you using in your cabs?

James
