Books/guides to soldering
Ok - I'm giving very serious thought now to building an 88VA. Trouble is, I'm a complete duffer at soldering, but owing to you nice people encouraging to do this project myself (rather than sit and watch a mate do it) I'm up for it.
To this end... Do you good people know of any guides/books etc which would be a good 'how to' to get me started? Thanks for any ideas. Oh...Happy New Year by the way. |

Re: Books/guides to soldering
if you Google it there's plenty of sites on how to solder
one thing to recommend is to buy cheap electronic kits from Maplins to practice on

Re: Books/guides to soldering
It's a lot to do with using the right equipment.
The picture of a Weller in Bassy Daves pictures is cock on, that's what you want if you can afford it. The reason low voltage is good is because it recovers from chilling almost instantly. If you use a cheap 230v iron as soon as you touch it to larghe tag strips it cools and your soldering is sub standard, whereas the Weller just moves the tip closer to the element and imediately recovers powering heat into the joint. You buy the tips by size and heat rating. Tecnique is tin tip with fresh solder each time hold it on both parts touch fresh solder to the joint and watch it run, it should wet into the joint, remove tip leave to cool naturally, don't allow it to move. If work moves in the slightest re do it. Wipe tip on wet sponge after each use and before each use. Always rewet it with fresh fluxed solder before each use. Same when desoldering wet it with fresh solder the flux will cause the old solder to run, then attach your suction pump or desoldering braid.

"Pro-amp builder DTB reccomends the Weller PU2D.... Its fully cock-on"
Its the ONLY choice for the discerning WD88VA builder. Buy one, you know it makes sense... (This advert has been bought to by too much free time and a few beers) Weller PLC, a DTB endorsed Company Why, its the 'secret' of my curly lady-locks, oopps, wrong weller
