Brushless DC motors

I'm thinking of using a brushless DC motor in a turntable project, but I'm not very well up on the electronics behind them. Does anyone have any information or suggestions?

Having said that,I'm very happy with the AC Premotec on my Linn,with a Lingo to drive it.

dont' go dc, trust me, I tried it and it made my record sound like a cd player, kileed the dynamics, too.

I wasn't thinking of the Origin Live type motor, which is a bit gutless IMHO. There are some seriously meaty motors out there, particularly the outer-rotor type (Revox capstan motor, for example). I suspect that the reason why some idler-type tts sound so rhythmic and dynamic is because of their ability to dump lots of motor power into the platter to overcome transient slowing. Trouble is brushless DC motors aren't really DC atall, but 3-phase or multiphase, but I can't find any lucid info on how their controllers work.

I think Ian's view is a little narrow. Certainly experiences with early Origin Live DC motors is not good and that was my finding even with the extortionally over-priced upgraded power supply. They seriously lacked torque, but not all DC motors are poor. The one currently used by Michell (don't know the make) has shed loads of torque. Regardless, even with the poor performance of the OL motors, I've never been able to agree with Ian's assessment on the sound performance. I found the OL Ultra kit very musical, but I had other unresolved issues which caused me to return the kit a year later for my money back. I subsequently bought the Michell which I've never regretted although I'm starting to wonder a little now with the rise of Lenco's etc.
